Teaching:

Spring 2008:
Fall 2008: The teaching schedule of the department is still very tentative, but I may teach among other things:

Geometry and Topology Seminar:

The schedule can be found here. This semester, we are meeting on Mondays at 4:30, with occasional variations.

Research:

My research is in the area of topology and geometry, with an emphasis on spaces of dimension 2 and 3. This has included hyperbolic geometry in the past 20 years, but I have more recently moved to the field of quantum topology (and algebra).  This work has been funded by the National Science Foundation (and a few others) since 1987.
Here is a link to an article in the magazine Science that describes research done by others but which is closely related to earlier work of mine. Incidentally, one of my quotes in this article was later cited as a particularly idiomatic use of the english language; anybody who has ever heard me speak english may find this amusing.

Are you a peri-doctoral mathematician interested in low-dimensional topology and geometry?

If yes, you may be interested in the program Mathematical Research Communities of the American Mathematical Society (see also the poster here, and the article by Allyn Jackson in the Notices of the AMS), and in particular in the summer conference that I am co-organizing in Snowbird, UT, on June 14-20, 2008. The funding has been approved by the National Science Foundation, and the application deadline is February 28, 2008.
